Resumen
En una perspectiva mundial, el rotavirus es el principal agente etiológico de gastroenteritis y deshidratación grave en niños menores de dos años de edad. Este virus infecta prácticamente a todos los niños en los primeros cinco años de vida y se estima que 600 mil de ellos mueren cada año por esta causa, principalmente en países en vías de desarrollo. En las naciones industrializadas, esta enfermedad es causa de numerosas consultas y hospitalizaciones con un alto costo sanitario y social.

Abstract (English)
In a global perspective, the rotavirus is the main etiologic agent of gastroenteritis and severe dehydration in children under two years of age. This virus infects virtually all children in the first five years of life and an estimated 600 000 of them die each year from this cause, mainly in developing countries. In industrialized nations, the disease is the cause of numerous consultations and hospitalizations with a high cost of health care and social development.
